Strasbourg Round-up: UpTop Tour at Strasbourg ITS Congress

On day 2 of this year’s European ITS Congress, the CAPITAL project took part in the UpTop Taxi Network Tour. This was a unique opportunity for ITS experts to learn about and experience some of the ground-breaking initiatives, projects and companies changing the way people travel using the latest ITS technologies.

The UpTop Global Taxi Network was created by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) to promote legal, reliable, high quality and safe services to taxi customers by making use of the latest smartphone technology for taxis, in full respect of the regulatory framework in force.

The tour began at the Dynniq stand with a presentation of the MOBiNET platform – an interface for transport services to communicate, such as taxi services. These services are integrated into the MOBiNET platform and merged to simplify the ordering of services. This method encourages interoperability and allows interaction between mapping companies, payment facilitators and taxi services.

Next up on the tour was the TomTom stand where a Q&A was held as participating asked how TomTom was developing apps to support taxis.

Following TomTom was ITS DeutschlandHochbahn, based in Hamburg. The Hochbahn scheme integrates buses, trains and ferries allowing passengers to buy single journey tickets rather than individual service tickets. Hochbahn currently manages 1.2 million passengers each day in Hamburg and has strong connections to Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS).

The final stop on the tour was at transportation app ‘Moovit’ stand. Moovit is a rapidly expanding public transportation app with up to date information provided by its users for its users. The app cooperates with other mobility providers and uses Big Data to ensure there is transportation information is accurate, free-flowing and widely available.
